The FFP Turbine Generator uses a rim-mounted, permanent magnet, direct-drive generator with front and rear diffusers and one moving part (the rotor) to maximize efficiency. Halbach magnetic arrays, using rare earth Neodymium magnets, provide higher field strength for greater efficiency and lower harmonic content, which facilitates easier grid synchronization than traditional bi-polar magnet arrays.
The rotor is designed to operate over a wider range of flow speeds than most other types of hydroelectric turbines (from 2 meters per second to 5 meters per second). The rotor has been designed to maximize rotation speed and to withstand stress across this range of flows. Following are illustrations showing a cross section and the component parts of the device.
