Recently my wife was talking on facebook to her friend from Canada about what her life was like in Canada. She asked her if her country was a socialist country and her reply was quite enlightening to us as Americans, so I have included it here.
From a Canadian Friend:
Over here, one day of the week once a month, people are allowed to put whatever they don't want on their front boulevard for others to come along and help themselves & take whatever they want. There is also a very popular website that people are selling their things on -- even the smallest of things. It's called kijiji. There are still garage sales though.
Our garbage days have just changed now too. The Gov't (which are the people) bought everyone one garbage bin, and one recycling bin (they are not big by any means), that we must put out once a week with the bins facing a certain way before 7 am.
We did have recycling bins before, but more the size of a laundry basket & they kept being stolen. To buy a new one was 5.00.
These new bins are 120.00 each. I can see them being stolen!
What I will never understand is why the Gov't (we, the people) don't ever get asked (like thru a poll or something) about the decisions they always make on our behalf. After all, they *are* working for us. A lot of the decisions that are made (most are stupid ideas and things they decide to do, for lack of a better word at the moment), & cost us more & more taxes.
Canada itself is a Democracy, although each individual Province (your "States") elect local Gov'ts etc. The Federal Canadian Government is currently Progressive Conservative, but, our local Provincial Government (Manitoba) is NDP which is New Democratic Party. This Party started out as the Socialist Party which gave us here in Canada our own version of Obama Care. While this Party will never win the Federal election it has been in power here in Manitoba for over 12 years. This makes Manitoba the highest taxed and one of the poorest Provinces in Canada. We are living in a Country and a Province that believes in re-distribution of wealth. Just like you in the United States, we are becoming more & more Socialist. This is an extremely slippery slope because as I'm sure you know, once you "give" something to someone it is very difficult if not impossible to take it back. If Obama wins this next election you had better hope & pray that the Senate & the Congress are controlled by the Republicans or Obama Care is a done deal and everyone's taxes will go through the roof and will NOT come down. Healthcare does not get cheaper & if the taxpayer is responsible for providing services to those who presumably cannot provide it for themselves, those that do pay taxes will see more & more of their hard earned money taken from them to provide for others. We call that -- Mandatory Charity -- which is obviously a contradiction
in terms.
You mentioned that you use the ballot box as your weapon instead of bullets these days...
In Canada we have one of the strictest gun laws in the world. All it has done is cost Canadians BILLIONS of dollars and has shown NO decrease in crime. Criminals either find guns that are not registered (duh) or use other weapons such as knives etc. Winnipeg has the proud distinction of competing for the most murders year after year. Sometimes we don't quite make it & have to settle for 2nd place. Any of the murders that are committed w/ guns turn out to be gang related and with guns that have been smuggled in from other Countries. The vast majority of our murders are stabbings. We have read the U.S. statistics, and it clearly shows a huge decrease in gun crimes in those States that allow it's Citizens to carry firearms for protection. In this Socialistic Country we call Canada we have a greater chance of going to prison defending ourselves in our own homes than the criminal who broke in to our homes do. We have to use equal-force to defend ourselves. For example if the criminal has a knife we cannot defend ourselves with a baseball bat. If we do...WE will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
Oh yes. I knew what you meant about ballots instead of bullets -- just thought I'd tell you a bit more about our Country. The way the Democrats are dividing your Country both racially & financially, let's hope it can be resolved through ballot boxes and not through a modern day Civil war.
That's fantastic what you are doing!! If Romney/Ryan wins the White House your Country will be back on the road to prosperity...no doubt.
